Radio breakfast show breakdown
Radio one Breakfast show:
Greg James job is mostly to create a light family friendly atmosphere with a lot of banter and conversation that is light comedy based. The show has a heavy emphasis on pop music with 40 songs in its 3 hour playing time, these songs are mostly from the UK top 40 showing that the shows main demographic is the 15-24 young adults from the UK. The show also has a lot of cultural signals for example on the 14th January 2020 broadcast there was a running joke of how windy the British Isles is. The show also has quizzes, and prizes to entice listener interaction. The show also features special guests like up on coming comedians such as Phil Wang this illustrates that the show is aimed at the 'trendy' percentage of the population. The show also features brief advertisements for other BBC produced shows such as the live lounge.
Radio Two sound of the sixties:
At the same time slot on radio two we have sound of the sixties showing that this programme is aimed more at the older demographics such as the 40+. The show also has a further emphasis with the news having a three minute news update every hour with headlines and brief information, as well as a weather segment. The show has an equal emphasis on music with 33 songs in its 2 hour run time but as I mentioned earlier these songs are much older perhaps to install emotions in its listeners of nostalgia. The show also has a heaver emphasis on tweeting its Radio Host Tony Blackburn with fun personal anecdotes, instead of adding fun banter Tony usually adds trivia on the music hes playing illustrating that the show has a heavier emphasis on information than the radio one breakfast show.
